Camera and microphone troubleshooting by operating system
If you have tried the steps in our camera and microphone error troubleshooting and audio troubleshooting articles and are still having issues, your operating system may be blocking your browser from accessing your camera or microphone. Follow the steps below for your operating system.
Mac troubleshooting
Check macOS privacy settings
macOS requires you to grant camera and microphone access to each application, including your browser. If your browser is not allowed, it cannot access your camera or microphone regardless of your browser settings.
macOS Ventura (13) or later: Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera (and Microphone). Make sure your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge) is toggled on.
macOS Mojave (10.14) through macOS Monterey (12): Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Camera (and Microphone). Make sure your browser is checked.
If your browser does not appear in the list, you may need to open Kira in that browser and attempt to use the camera first. macOS will then prompt you to grant access, and the browser will appear in the list.
After changing these settings, quit your browser completely and reopen it for the changes to take effect.
General Mac troubleshooting steps
- Make sure all other applications that use the camera or microphone are closed, including Zoom, FaceTime, Photo Booth, and any video conferencing apps open in other browser tabs.
- Restart your computer and go through Device Setup again from the beginning.
- Test your camera in a Mac application such as Photo Booth or FaceTime, and test your microphone in Voice Memos.
- If your camera or microphone does not work in any application, the issue may be with your hardware. Contact Apple Support for further assistance.
- If your camera and microphone work in other applications but not in Kira, please contact us.
Windows troubleshooting
Check Windows privacy settings
Windows 10 and 11 have privacy settings that can block applications, including your browser, from accessing your camera and microphone.
Windows 11: Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera (and Microphone). Make sure Camera access (or Microphone access) is turned on. Scroll down and make sure Let desktop apps access your camera (and microphone) is also turned on. Your browser is a desktop app, so this toggle must be enabled.
Windows 10: Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera (and Microphone). Make sure Allow apps to access your camera (and microphone) is turned on. Scroll down and make sure Allow desktop apps to access your camera (and microphone) is also turned on.
Update your camera or microphone driver
If your camera or microphone is not working in any application, the driver may need to be updated. To update your drivers:
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices) to find your camera, or expand Audio inputs and outputs to find your microphone.
- Right-click your device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and follow the prompts.
You can also check for driver updates through Windows Update by going to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Some driver updates are listed under Advanced options > Optional updates.
General Windows troubleshooting steps
- Make sure all other applications that use the camera or microphone are closed, including Zoom and any video conferencing apps open in other browser tabs.
- Restart your computer and go through Device Setup again from the beginning.
- Test your camera and microphone in another application to confirm they are working outside of Kira.
- If your camera or microphone does not work in any application, the issue may be with your hardware or drivers. Try the driver update steps above, or contact your device manufacturer for support.
- If your camera and microphone work in other applications but not in Kira, please contact us.

- Make sure you have allowed camera and microphone access for app.kiratalent.com in Chrome's site settings.
- Close any other tabs or apps that may be using the camera or microphone.
- Restart your Chromebook and try again.
- If the issue persists, please contact us.
